Self-service overview
The self-service module lets customers complete a full sale on their own, on an unattended POS unit, without a salesperson attending to the checkout.
Self-service turns a POS unit into an unattended checkout: customers scan their own items, pay through a connected terminal, and the sale posts to Business Central without a salesperson operating the register. It’s typically deployed on a dedicated device (for example, a Zebra kiosk) running Self-Service Minor Tom in kiosk mode, and it relies on a digital, rather than printed, receipt flow.
A self-service deployment touches several areas that need to be configured together:
- The POS unit and its profiles - POS Type, View Profile, End of Day Profile, Named Actions Profile, and Security Profile all need self-service-specific values.
- Digital receipts - since the unit is unattended, receipts are typically issued as a QR code or by email instead of print.
- The device and its software - the physical unit, Self-Service Minor Tom, the HW Connector, and Major Tom’s kiosk mode.
- The self-checkout URL - what the device opens on start-up, and how it authenticates without a salesperson signing in.
Where to start
- New deployment: follow Deploy a self-service POS unit, which walks through all four areas above as one commissioning checklist.
- POS configuration only: see Set up POS Self-Service Profile.
- Device installation only: see Install Self-service Minor Tom.
- Something isn’t working: see Self-Service Profile troubleshooting.
